The Role
The Senior Manager Scientific & External Engagement leads scientific engagement strategies that support PMI's smoke-free transformation and help create an enabling regulatory environment for Smoke-Free Products (SFPs) in Japan.
This role builds and manages relationships with key stakeholders including scientific and medical communities, regulators, government bodies, and opinion leaders to increase awareness and understanding of Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) and PMI science. The position drives high-impact engagement initiatives, supports evidence-based policy discussions, and enhances the credibility of PMI's scientific approach externally and internally.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Develop and execute scientific engagement strategies aligned with business objectives and regulatory priorities.
- Build and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders, scientific organizations, healthcare professionals, regulators, and policymakers.
- Lead external engagement programs, scientific forums, conferences, and initiatives that strengthen understanding of THR and Smoke-Free Products.
- Provide scientific expertise and guidance to internal stakeholders, ensuring the accuracy and consistency of scientific communications and materials.
- Partner with External Affairs, Communications, Commercial, and R&D teams to support policy advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory discussions.
- Identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for local scientific research, evidence generation, and stakeholder collaboration.
- Monitor emerging trends, risks, and opportunities related to science, public health, and regulation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Significant experience in a highly regulated industry such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare devices, biotechnology, or related sectors.
- Strong background in Medical Marketing, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Market Access, Government Affairs or a similar function.
- Proven track record leading complex cross-functional projects and influencing senior stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a scientific discipline, public health, science communications, or a related field.
- Fluent Japanese and business-level English.
- Experience in scientific or medical communications within a global organization is highly desirable.
- Strong strategic thinking, stakeholder management, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear and compelling messages for diverse audiences.
