Role: Privacy Manager – Asia Region (Japan Focus)

We’re seeking a privacy professional to join our Legal Department, providing expert guidance across several Asian markets, with a primary focus on Japan. Reporting to the Regional Privacy Manager, this role requires integrity, sound judgment, and a collaborative mindset.

You’ll work closely with senior leaders, advising on privacy strategy, policy, and compliance. You’ll help shape and implement privacy frameworks aligned with evolving laws and PMI’s commitment to ethical standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on legal requirements and risks related to privacy across Japan and other Asian markets.
  • Counsel senior management, legal, IT security, and business teams on privacy risk mitigation.
  • Monitor and interpret evolving privacy laws and regulations, translating them into actionable requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to embed privacy compliance into business processes, technologies, and initiatives.
  • Develop and implement local privacy strategies, policies, notices, controls, and training.
  • Support audits, assessments, and continuous improvement efforts related to privacy compliance.
  • Operate with independent judgment while consulting with the broader privacy and legal teams.

What You Bring

Legal & Technical Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of Japanese and regional privacy laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in privacy, compliance, or risk roles—legal background preferred.
  • Ability to draft high-quality documents in English.

Business Acumen

  • Strategic thinker with strong judgment and a deep understanding of business drivers.
  • Effective communicator who can simplify complex topics for diverse audiences.

  • Detail-oriented with strong planning and project management skills.
