Purpose of the role
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Manager Corporate Communications will be responsible for developing and executing short-term and long-term communications and public relations plan to protect and enhance the reputation of Philip Morris in Japan. The individual will work with multiple stakeholders from Global Communications, Japan Communications teams and PMJ President and Head of Functions to tell compelling stories on PMI and PMJ's transformation, science and innovation, and other key themes to external stakeholders including general population, government stakeholders, scientific community, and media. The ideal candidate should possess experience in driving programs using an integrated communications approach leveraging paid, owned, and earned opportunities. The role is expected to tailor the communications to local context and identifying local opportunities.
Accountability
Develop and execute external relations strategy aligned to PMI and PMJ's business and communications objectives.
- This includes:
- Building a communications plan to position PMJ as leader in the industry with a vision to design a smoke-free future and a commitment to develop and bring to market breakthrough smoke-free/reduced risk products
- Increase understanding of PMJ by creating and telling differentiated stories about the company leveraging traditional and new forms of media. Inform and communicate to stakeholders with compelling messages.
- Communicating the narrative of PMJ to external stakeholders through the general, business, science, and healthcare media, speaking opportunities, key events
- Establishing thought leadership and presence of PMJ and PMI’s spokespeople
- Developing effective communications campaigns leveraging appropriate channels such as earned, owned, and paid
Develop a proactive media outreach plan including interviews and key coverages.

- Identifying and building/maintaining relationships with top tier media
- Developing story angles including Science and Innovation, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Sustainability and pitch the stories to the media
Manage crisis and issues to mitigate the impact on the reputation of the company.

- Working closely with Director of Communications to assess the crisis or issues
- Developing crisis and issues response plan with holding statements and Qs&As
- Ensuring internal alignment across PMJ Leadership team, Global/Region Communications, and crisis/issue response team on the management of the crisis/issue
- Acting as spokesperson to monitor and handle media inquiries
- Preparing the news coverage report and providing recommendations per the development of the crisis/issue
Develop and implement a digital communications strategy

- Developing the contents for owned channels, e.g. corporate website, corporate microsite (in Philip Morris Japan, we have a smokefree nippon microsite. Blogs and newsletters)
- Developing and implementing paid digital campaigns
- Working with Global Communications to execute paid amplification of major PMJ news coverage
- Developing strategy and contents for social channels
- Growth of social channels
Measure and report the effectiveness of external and digital communications activities.

- Working with PMJ PR agency and news monitoring agency on the quarterly PR report to determine future opportunities
- Measure the effectiveness of digital communications activities results by reviewing website metrics, engagement of contents on social channels, sentiments, etc and enhance the digital communications plan where required
Build and expand the skills and capabilities of the team and support development of other team member through coaching and empowerment.
Work experience
- 10+ years of professional experience with proven records in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Public and Corporate affairs.
- Proven experience in running programs using digital media; understand social media
- Experience working across multiple levels (including executive level), functions and regions; able to clearly communicate complex financial information in an easy-to-understand manner; able to deliver message effectively verbally and in writing.
- Experience and success in leading and developing teams
