The Materials Handling Specialist (Class A CDL required) is responsible for transporting tobacco and non‑tobacco inventories between Leaf warehousing locations and the factory in full compliance with DOT regulations. This role independently coordinates with other Materials Handling Specialists, Leaf department personnel, and factory teams to ensure efficient scheduling, pickup, and delivery of freight.

When not operating tractor‑trailers, this position supports general warehousing activities and provides additional logistical services to the factory as needed. The specialist ensures all inventory movements are performed safely, accurately, and in a manner that maximizes overall operational efficiency.

 

This position sits with our Swedish Match affiliate.

 

Your ‘day to day’

 

    • Fully understands how to operate and safely drive tractor‑trailers in a DOT‑compliant manner.
    • Operates tractor‑trailer combinations not exceeding 80,000 lbs. GVW.
    • Conducts and documents all required DOT pre‑trip inspections.
    • Complies with all DOT regulations, including maintaining accurate hours‑of‑service logs.
    • Transports freight from the point of origin to assigned destinations.
    • Organizes freight to ensure contents are properly secured and protected from damage.
    • Safely and efficiently handles and unloads goods at designated locations.
    • Obtains required signatures or warehouse scans to confirm and complete deliveries.
    • Verifies that the contents of each shipment/load match the accompanying manifest documents.
    • Maintains cleanliness of the assigned vehicle.
    • Performs routine vehicle tasks such as refueling, checking tire pressures, and reporting needed repairs.
    • Notifies management of any major maintenance concerns or delivery issues.
    • Obeys all applicable traffic laws and adjusts driving to match weather and road conditions.
    • Adheres to all company rules, regulations, and policies.
    • Communicates with Leaf and Factory management as necessary to support operations.
    • Withdraws and enters inventory to and from storage locations.
    • Documents inventory movements using hand‑held scanners or manual hard‑copy forms.
    • Maintains accuracy in all inventory counts.
    • Operates forklifts and hand trucks as required.
    • Performs general warehouse material handling tasks as assigned.
    • Performs general maintenance and housekeeping duties as assigned.
    • Receives selective training to load or unload materials classified as hazardous by DOT standards.

 

Who we’re looking for:

 

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid Class A CDL license required.  Air brakes endorsement required.

Experience

  • Experience driving a tractor-trailer combination. (Minimum 1-year preferred). 
  • Experience operating a fork-lift preferred

Skills

    • Knowledge of all DOT regulations required to hold a Class A CDL license.

Other

    • Clean driving record with no moving violations.            
    • Must pass a DOT physical.
    • As required by DOT, subject to random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.

 

Annual Base Salary Range: $ 60,000 - $75,000
